Dr. Bach commonly referred to his flowers as 'healing herbs'. Several of the plants were known for their medicinal properties but it took Dr. Bachs instinctive drive for an alternative form of healing to recognize the importance of the flowering aspect of certain plants in true healing.

The 7 Bach Flower Groups

“The cause of all our troubles is self and separateness and this vanishes as soon as Love and the great knowledge of Unity become part of our natures.”

Dr. Edward Bach

Dr. Bach separated his healing herbs into 7 emotional groups

The groups make it easier for us to separate the Bach healing herbs into feelings, such as fear, despair, loneliness, uncertainty etc. We can ask ourselves, how do I feel? Do I feel fear? What kind of fear? Or do I feel despair, and what kind of despair? Then find the herb that most closely matches your emotional experience and look it up in the complete alphabetical list.

The Bach Flower Remedies are so simple to use that no science, no knowledge is necessary apart from the simple method described above yet can also strongly complement many other healing modalities.

Astrological character classifications

The Twelve Healers, Dr. Bach's list of the most crucial of his remedies, correspond to twelve types of personality, each possessing a quality to develop and a primary fault or negative emotional/mental tendency to overcome. He described the twelve types as the "twelve great lessons of life" and believed that each of us is primarily concentrating on one of these lessons in particular.

Bach wrote that "each herb corresponds with one of the qualities, and its purpose is to strengthen that quality, so that the personality may rise above the fault that is the particular stumbling block." (Barnard, Julian, ed; Collected Writings of Edward Bach, Bach Educational Programme, Hereford, UK, 1987, p 100.)

Bach outlined the positive and negative qualities of the Twelve Healers as follows:

In a 1933 article on the "Twelve Healers" Bach revealed that the twelve primary types of personality "are indicated to us by the Moon according to which sign of the Zodiac she is in at birth". According to Bach, a study of this would reveal:

1. the type of personality

2. one's object and work in life and

3. the remedy which will assist one in that work. (Article cited in Barnard, pp. 77-78)

Bach firmly believed that the secret of life is to be true to our personality (or Moon sign), and that what diverts us from this purpose is interference from outside sources. He wrote that "our personality we learn from the position of the moon at birth; our dangers of interference from the planets".

To astrologers he gave the warning that they, "too much emphasize the planets, for, if we can hold our personality, be true unto ourselves, we need fear no planetary or outside influence." So while the Moon sign is the key to our personality, and how we can be true to it, the corresponding remedy can assist us to maintain that personality.

Astrologically, the Moon relates to the reigning need of the personality and represents one's emotional nature, moods, feelings and caring tendencies.

We can understand why Bach linked the Moon signs to the Twelve Healers, which embody the great 'lesson' of life. It is in overcoming the instinctual and therefore entrenched negative emotional tendency of our Moon sign that we experience the challenge of our life, or indeed its major lesson.

Unfortunately, Bach did not outline which of the Twelve Healers correlated with which Moon sign. In a letter to the Naturopathic Journal in 1933 he expressed his desire to remain cautious about astrology and not to be associated with anything dogmatic. Interestingly, he did say that his work on the remedies would "assist vastly in the purification and understanding of astrology". (Barnard, p.16)

I have found through personal experience and research that there are actually three flowers that express most adequately the depth of each Moon sign. You might say they represent three layers or levels of emotional and psychological complexity of our personality.

As to my personal feelings about Astrology, I am of the conviction we choose the specific time of our birth and have left ourselves clues to what we need to accomplish in this manifestation, much the same as Seth has stated, "Now astrology has its merits, and many good ones. An excellent astrologist can help people to better understand themselves. Understand, the individuals themselves between lives choose the time of their own birth, adopting ahead of time those characteristics that they feel will best aid their development, and challenge their abilities".

Your will can override your natal chart. It's important that you realize you create your reality. You are exactly the way you want to be right now, otherwise you would be different. If you fit your Moon sign enough to make you uncomfortable, as if someone was watching you and knew some of your secrets, then you can use this information to remove some of those emotional patterns you thought were a permanent part of your life and begin re-patterning your beliefs and emotions by tapping into those strengths inherent in your soul.

"Illness and suffering are the results of the misdirection of creative energy. They are a part of the creative force, however. They do not come from a different source than, say, health and vitality. Suffering is not good for the soul, unless it teaches you how to stop suffering. That is its purpose." -- Seth
